Blessing of the Fleet
Wantagh Park, located in the hamlet of Wantagh, NY, is a 111-acre property. It is part of the Nassau county parks system. This park offers recreational activities and features a swimming complex, tennis courts, jogging and walking paths, and a beach. There is also an administration building and a fishing pier.
The park is open to the public and is home to the Wantagh Bay Yacht Club. The club hosts the annual Blessing of the Fleet, a ceremony that is held at the marina. Each year, the community gathers to remember the maritime industry’s fallen.
On June 26, a parade of representative boats and vessels will pass by the marina. The boats will be illuminated. Representative vessels will receive benedictions from the clergy and community members. A special tribute will be paid to World War II veterans.
The Blessing of the Fleet is part of the Portuguese Festival Weekend, which takes place from June 23 to June 26. There will be live music and food throughout the weekend.
Summer skin cancer screening series
The Colette Coyne Melanoma Awareness Campaign (CCMAC) and Senator Charles Fuschillo of Merrick were involved in a successful Summer Skin Cancer Screening Series at Wantagh Park, Wantagh, New York. During the two-week screening series, over 150 people were screened for skin cancer and nearly half of them were referred for follow up care. Thanks to the efforts of the CCMAC, the staff at Wantagh Park, and Senator Fuschillo’s office, the screenings were a great success.
Wantagh High School students are partnering with Last Hope Animal Rescue to help animals find homes. In addition to helping cats and dogs get adopted, Wantagh High School students have also helped the animal rescue to raise money to support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. A team of students and teachers is now on track to exceed their fundraising goal of $110,000.
Wantagh High School student artists have also created portraits of the animals at Last Hope Animal Rescue. This effort helps the rescue to raise funds to keep the shelter running and provides the animals with a sense of security. Check our next area of interest here.
